I agree with you 100% about the implications of starting these online communites, or even simple taggin projects, with little funding an/or the hlep of volunteers. I love my docents, and I've be completely crippled at work without them, but I couldn't trust their computer skills on projects like the ones we read about (hell, most of them just figured out how to use e-mail.) Using interns fro these problems presents the same problem. I was thinking that if we had a volunteer coordinator, maybe that person could handle the oversite for online projects, but where's the money for that.

I love getting perspecitves from people writing from the art museum community. One of these days, they'l realize that art museums are almost entirely different from any other museum, from their amazing funding down to the types of volunteers they attract (I always thing about Charlotte from Sex in the City...a bored "lady who lunches.")

Perhaps the reason for limited attention or exposure was because they are esoteric. One of the primary objectives of the Gutenberg-e was to preserve endangered subject matter expert articles! Oh now, the definitive study on cricket ears located below the knee cap as opposed to behind the knee will go extinct!

You say simple like it is a bad thing. A project like this may be simple for the end-user, but require a great deal of consideration on your part. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I think it sounds fascinating. Can you do 360 degree views? I was just up there on Sunday evening, but too late to get inside the house. I would love to see something like this.

I think there's the nucleus of a really interesting project here, and one which has direct and tangible benefits to your current work. There's a clear audience, and a straightforward mission (making available something that will be inaccessible).

I think the difficult parts of this project (and the things that make it way more than "simple") will come up when you start thinking about its more concrete aspects: how granular will you be? Will the tour simply be photos, or more of a map of the site as an interface? How much interpretive content will you want, and how much can you repurpose from existing materials.

Moreover, I'd really want you to grapple with the costs of this, both in time and resources; usually, the kinds of questions I asked above are resolved not just by what one wants to do, but by what's simply feasible. It'll be very interesting to see how this plays out in your proposal...

If you click on the "About" link under "Home", you will find and working "About Me" page. It's not a lot, but I'm constantly adding to it.

Thanks for visiting
